Abstract:
The sensitivities of four strains of Entamoeba histolytica, one strain of E. coli and six species of free-Jivlng amoebae, namely Naegleria gruberi,Didascalus thorntont,Schizopyrenus russelli, Hartmannella rhysodes, H. glebae and Acanthamoeba sp., to emetine and conessine were determined. Emetine against E. histo lytica provides a better standard for comparison than .conesetne.for-the purpose of in vitro screening of amoebicidal compounds. In the case of free-living amoebae a correlation exists between motility and drug action. N.gruberi,D. thorntoni and S.russelli are more susceptible to emetine than other free-living amoebae.
