An effective route for the synthesis of a variety of 2-methylbenzofurans is reported via DBU catalyzed dehydroiodination of
easily accessible 2-iodomethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofurans. The latter could be easily obtained by water mediated iodocyclization of allyl phenols.
