An effective route towards the synthesis of 2-methylbenzofurans has been reported. This method allows the preparation of a variety of 2-methyl benzofurans by DBU catalysed dehydroiodination of easily accessible 2-iodomethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzofurans. The latter could be easily obtained by water mediated iodocylization of allyl phenols
