Abstract:
β-Sitosterol, taraxerol and a triterpene diol, m.p. 268-9°, have been isolated from the bark of M. esculenra. The diol has been isomerized to erythrodiol Indicating C25 as the site of the primary hydroxyl function. It has been further converted to taraxerol through tosylation followed by reduction of the tosylate with lithium aluminium hydride confirming the structure assigned for the diol.
