Abstract: A straightforward synthesis of tetramic acid derivatives with dienyl susbstituents at C-5 from L-ascorbic acid is reported. The synthesis involves the PCC oxidation of allylic alcohol followed by olefination and subsequent reaction with different amines to give 5-hydroxy lactams, which underwent pTSA catalysed dehydration to give the required tetramic acid derivatives.
